Behavioral theories are meant to enhance skills especially on children whose use will become handy later in their life. Operant conditioning is one of the behavioral theories which was pioneered by Fredrick Skinner based on the premise that reinforcing certain behavior enhances their repetition, but punishing will stop learning of the particular behavior (McLeod, 2015). Skinner dedicated his time to study human behavior and engaged in understanding the reason for people performing given behavior and their consequences. The operant condition theory focusses on the intentional actions that have an impact on the surrounding environment Staddon& Cerutti, 2003). The theory of operant conditioning explains the process which prompts certain behaviors to occurs and why others are inhibited.
The origin of the operant theory was Edwards Thorndike, a psychologist who came up with “law “of effect (Thorndike, 1898). In his theory, he stated that behavior which was proceeded by a pleasant outcome, it was likely to be repeated, while a behavior proceeded by an unpleasant outcome would be stopped or extinct (Thorndike, 1898). Skinners’ theory introduces a new concept termed as reinforcement. He stated that where behavior is reinforced, it is likely to be repeated or strengthened but the behavior which is not reinforced is doomed to stop. His theory meant that behavior is changed by the kind of reinforcements applied after the desired response has been shown (McLeod, 2015).
